The precursor to the Ningbo University Health Science Center was the Medicine Schoolof Ningbo University, which was founded in 1998 through the generous donations initiated by the renowned medical scientistin Hong Kong, Dr. Tong Yuhuan. In November 2022, it was elevated to a Health Science Center.
The center offers three five-year undergraduate programs in clinical medicine, preventive medicine, and stomatology, as well as a four-year undergraduate program in pharmacy. Additionally, it has an undergraduate program in clinical medicine (taught in English) for international students and a clinical medicine elite innovation class program. It also boasts one first-level academic doctoral program in clinical medicine, one postdoctoral research station, three first-level academic master's programs in clinical medicine, public health and preventive medicine, and basic medicine, as well as four professional master's programs in clinical medicine, public health, pharmacy, and medical technology. The center's clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, and biology and biochemistry have all entered the top 1% of global academic institutions.
There are currently 3,096 full-time students enrolled in the center, including 55 doctoral students, 948 master's students, and 2,093 undergraduate students (including 308 international students). In addition, there are 1,115 students pursuing a master's degree through the equivalent academic degree application. Students have won one national first-class prize, one second-class prize, and one third-class prize in the "Challenge Cup" College Students' Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Competition, one provincial first-class prize, and four first-class prizes. They have also won three first-class prizes and one third-class prize in the "Challenge Cup" College Students' Entrepreneurship Plan Competition, and four gold medals in the finals of the China International College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (formerly known as the "Internet Plus" College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition). In the Zhejiang Province College Students' Innovation Competition, they have won 10 gold medals (including 2 international student teams), two silver medals, and three bronze medals. The center has been awarded one project of the Ministry of Education's Comprehensive Reform and Quality Improvement Project for College Students' Ideological and Political Education. In the past three years, the overall employment rate of graduates has remained above 97%. The average postgraduate admission rate for clinical medicine undergraduates is 63.7%, and for preventive medicine undergraduates, it is 40.2%. In the National Qualification Examination for Practicing Physicians, the average pass rate for clinical medicine undergraduates is 81.08%, which is about 13 percentage points higher than the national average. The average pass rate for clinical medicine master's students in theoretical examination is 99.11%, and the average pass rate for clinical practice ability examination is 99.17%, with an overall average pass rate of 98.28%. In 2023, the pass rate for preventive medicine undergraduates in the National Qualification Examination for Public Health Practicing Physicians was 80.95%, ranking first in the province.
The center consists of four schools: the School of Medicine, the School of Basic Medical Sciences,the School of Public Health, and the School of Pharmacy. It also includes two university-level research institutes affiliated with the center: Ningbo University New Drug Technology Research Institute and Ningbo University Institute of Intelligent Medicine and Bioengineering. There are two public service platforms: the Instrument Center and Ningbo University Body Donation Center. The center is responsible for managing the Ningbo University Behavioral Neuroscience Center, Ningbo University Diabetes Research Center, Ningbo University Biomedical Engineering Research Center, and Ningbo University Animal Experiment Center. It has six directly affiliated hospitals, five non-directly affiliated hospitals, 14 teaching hospitals, 20 preventive medicine teaching practice bases, 19 community health service practice teaching bases, 9 pharmacy teaching bases, and one provincial "13th Five-Year Plan" provincial college students' extracurricular practice education base.
The center has been approved for one national teaching team, one Zhejiang provincial teaching team, and eight Ningbo municipal scientific and technological innovation teams. It has won four national-level courses and 19 provincial-level courses. It has been approved for one national first-class professional construction point, one provincial first-class professional construction point, one provincial key and one provincial advantageous professional, and one provincial experimental teaching demonstration center. The center has been approved for the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health's Excellent Doctor Education and Training Plan pilot project. It has one national international cooperation base, one provincial key laboratory, one provincial and ministerial international cooperation base, and two provincial and municipal key disciplines. It has undertaken 195 national projects (including 5 key projects) and 337 provincial and ministerial projects, with a total of 209 million yuan in scientific research funds. It has won one national science and technology progress second prize (participated) and 15 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. It has been granted 83 invention patents, published 2,041 papers (including 1,341 high-level papers and 29 highly cited papers), and published 19 textbooks and monographs and 6 compilations.
The center has a high-level faculty team, including 103 full-time teachers and 747 clinical teachers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 31 professors, 31 associate professors, and 41 mid-level teachers. It has six national high-level foreign experts, 45 doctoral supervisors, and 558 master's supervisors. Ten people enjoy the special allowance of the State Council, and 47 people have been selected into various talent projects at the provincial and municipal levels.
The center actively pursues an internationalized educational path, develops international student programs, and offers full-English teaching. Since 2011, it has begun to enroll international students. In 2020, it launched a joint doctoral program in clinical medicine with the University of Bourgogne Franche-Comté in France. At the same time, it has strengthened international exchanges and cooperation, and has established friendly cooperative relationships with academic exchanges and teacher and student exchanges for further studies with universities such as the Medical University of South Carolina in the United States, the Faculty of Medicine of Angers University in France, the University of Skövde in Sweden, the University of London in the United Kingdom, the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, Charles Sturt University in Australia, and the University of Adelaide in Australia.
